Milan city guide

A few special places to enjoy the city like a local

Whether it's your first time or your umpteenth, the Interaction 20 Core Team has hand-picked some of our favorite spots to experience Milan like a local. We've included many places near the NH Milano Touring (the conference hotel), as well as must-sees for designers.

First time? Start at Piazza Duomo, home to one of the world's largest cathedrals that took over six centuries to complete and is decorated by more than 3000 statues, including the gold-plated "Madonnina" spire, visible from around the city.

If you are a Milan pro, find a few hidden gems that make Milan special: from incredible food to bee-yooo-teee-ful architecture.

Duomo - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan

Osservatorio Milan (from Fondazione Prada)

Accessed from a small door in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, this rooftop exhibition space is managed by Fondazione Prada. Right now there is an exhibit showing Kate Crawford's work on AI, identity and privacy.

Rem Koolhaas architecture, Muccia Prada, Wes Anderson's bar, sweeping city views, Michelin starred chefs in a former gin distillery. And of course, lots of contemporary art. Worth the hike!

Duomo - Piazza Santo Stefano, 20122 Milan

Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa

Milan has countless churches, but this one is perhaps the most bizzare. The church's ossuary is decorated floor to ceiling with human bones and skulls, from the cemetery that once lied beneath.

1930s art deco villa with a pool and tennis court designed by Piero Portaluppi, seen in the film I am Love. The guided tour covers history, architecture and design. Call ahead to reserve a tour in English.

Located within the beautiful Parco Sempione, Milan's design museum has rotating exhibits, a sculpture garden, theater and a top-notch rooftop restaurant with city views.

Castello - Piazza Castello, 27, 20121 Milan

Studio Museo Achille Castiglioni

See drawings, prototypes, archives and works of Italian designer and architect in his studio. Tours are often led by his daughter. Booking ahead is required.

Most talked about during Milan Design Week, this gallery, shop and design studio is open to visits year round. Orlandi is often considered the most important influencer and visionary in furniture and interior design.

Carla Sozzani's concept store, bookshop, gallery and cafe.

Italian for Vertical Forest, these residential towers have over 900 trees growing on many terraces. Designed by Stefano Boeri and a symbol of Milan's urban redeveloment.

Contemporary Milanese cuisine featuring risotto, ossobuco and fresh water fish from nearby lakes.

Artisanal pizza with a menu that changes seasonally. Their winter menu features unfamiliar, yet delicious toppings for pizza like beetroot puree, roasted squash and walnuts. Vegetarian friendly with multiple locations in Milan.

The IxD20 Core Team had multiple dinners here and returns to this restaurant for carbonara pasta with black truffles.

Hovering over Parco Sempione on the terrace of the Triennale Design Museum, with beautiful decor and elegant plates to match.

Considered Milan's best seafood restaurant, the interior is inspired by Milanese trattorias of the early 1900s. Also try the less formal Giacomo Bistrot next door.

Open for over 100 years, a refined restaurant with excellent pasta. We recommend trying the unusual fish tortelloni, and not skipping dessert!

A great spot to discover Milanese cuisine, local salumi, cheese and wines after a walk around the historic center.

Inspired by the restaurants you'll find in a fish market, a fun and casual place to eat some of Milan's freshest fish and seafood. Get there before 8pm to avoid a long wait for a table. No reservations.

Craft beer bar from one of Milan's best bakeries - Pavè

Often on the lists of the World's Best Bars, try inventive cocktails in a very intimate private spot.

Famous for where the negroni sbagliato ("mistaken negroni," made with prosecco in place of gin) was invented, this bar maintains its 1960s charm.

An all day cafe and bar In the courtyard of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna museum. The decor is inspired by cafes in Sicily and is the brainchild of Milan fashion design "royalty" Luisa Beccaria.

Despite the name, this bar is not in the Isola neighborhood, but rather in Chinatown. Open since 1896, nowadays you’ll find historic charm and a place where the local Milanese dialect speakers still hang out.

The lead mixologist and co-owner is a young Italian graphic designer who moved to London to study English. He returned to Italy and instead opened up Kilburn, where London pub culture mixes with Milan's cocktail tradition.

This music-themed cocktail lounge and restaurant from the owners of our favorite MAG cafe also has live jazz and even DJs on weekend evenings.

Moleskine's first design cafe is on all day and a good spot for coffee, getting some work done or meeting friends for lunch, as well as a bookshop and brand store.

This spacious, yet cozy pastry shop and cafe is a great place for coffee, a light lunch and of course something sweet with a group of friends.

This bakery is such a cult favorite among Milan's design and hipster crowd that on weekends there can be lines out the door. During the week it's a great spot for a coffee break or to get some work done.

NAVIGLI - Ripa di Porta Ticinese, 93b, 20143, Milan

Vinoir - Vini d’autore e cucina

Not just a wine bar. It’s a place where books, wine, food and stories all have the same importance. Born as a wine shop where to learn about wine, Vinoir is now a perfect aperitivo spot, where to talk, eat, sip and discover artisanal and biodynamic wines.
