Interactive Machine Learning in the Browser

Andreas Refsgaard

Hands on introduction to machine learning with a focus on creating your own interactive web applications.

Designers tend to think that machine learning is only for programmers or data scientist with terabytes of training data. This workshop we will prove them wrong!

In this workshop interaction designer and digital artist Andreas Refsgaard will show you how to make simple websites that can be trained to react to costume inputs from users.

The workshop will work as a hands on introduction to machine learning with a focus on creating your own interactive applications that live on the web.

Learn how to:

- Make interactive websites that can learn and react to user input from webcam and microphone

- Train supervised machine learning algorithms in minutes

- Use the friendly ml5js library that builds on top of Tensorflow.js

Workshop tickets are sold separately from other conference events.

Outline

30 percent lecture

30 percent hands-on exercises

40 percent individual project with aid from teacher

Target audience

Interaction designers, design students and creative technologists at

all levels.

About the speaker

Andreas Refsgaard

I am an artist and creative coder based in Copenhagen.

I use algorithms and machine learning to make unconventional connections between inputs and outputs, which allows people to play music using only eye movement and facial gestures, control games by making silly sounds, transform drawings of musical instruments on paper into real compositions and train algorithms to decide what is funny, funky or boring.

My works have been published in New Scientist, Vice, Gizmodo, PSFK and Designboom, awarded by Interaction Awards and Core77 and exhibited in museums and at festivals in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

I has been a public speaker at international events like Mutation, openVTR, OEB Conference, DIGITEC, NextConf, Bump, Space10 and Roskilde Festival and taught workshops on creative computation, interaction design and machine learning at institutions like CIID, KIKK, ECAL, Umeå Institute of Design, LUCA School of Arts, Resonate, Hyper Island, Design School Kolding, ofCourse and SchoolOfMa.
