Design Leadership Therapy

Daniel Boos, Julius Skopp & Enea Nurri

“Lounge into our comfy chair and tell us about your leadership challenges.” Join Design Leadership Therapy @ Interaction 20 #designleadership #uxdesign #productdesign

In the first part, participants are going to learn what’s going on in design leaders' heads. Listen to genuine confessions: on confidence making tough decisions, on leading and responding to change, managing communication with other managers in the organization, facing constant battles of quality against the speed, hiring, firing, and taking care of designers. This is going to help aspiring leaders understand whether design leadership is right trajectory for them and existing leaders better techniques on handling similar challenges.

Second part is a typical Design Leadership Therapy: participants are going to have a chance to ask for advice with their very own challenges. And design leaders are going to listen, analyze, and provide guidance.

Workshop tickets are sold separately from other conference events.

Outline

Our workshop starts with a short input about leading design teams. We then dive deeply into the main topics for design leaders with several exercises such as transitioning from contributor to leader, setting up and growing your design team, manage up, down and side, being a strategic designer and measuring the design impact of your activities. Finally, we come to our therapy session format, where the participants share their current issues and the whole group provides advices.

Target audience

The workshop is for people leading a design team or community in a company. We also welcome people aspiring to become design leader.

About the speakers

Daniel Boos

I am fascinated by how new technologies and societal trends are transforming how and where we live, what we work on and with whom we collaborate. For more than a decade I am committed to applying human-centred design approaches in organizations to increase their user centricity and to improve the user experience of their products and services.

I lead the SBB user experience team since April 2017. Together with the team, I set the goal to enable and create new positive experiences for customers and employees. Prior to that, I worked at a telecommunication , primarily focused on the future of work and collaboration in corporate environments.

My background is in the social sciences and I have a doctorate at the ETH Zurich on future responsibilities and Internet of Things applications.

Julius Skopp

I believe every successful organization should be experience-driven. I underwent a transformation: from a digital product design unicorn in my own agency to a design leader in a global corporation. I’m the director of UX at Expedia, leading a design team working on hotel back-office. My focus lies in the evolution of design leadership practice and actionable data in digital products.

Enea Nurri

I'm leading a design team for homegate.ch: a 16 years old Swiss real estate internet dinosaur.

In 2018, I was hired as the first UX designer ever in the company and I successfully built the design team from scratch meanwhile the company evolved is own tech-centric legacy to a more user-centric approach.

I strongly believe that lead designers' main responsibility is the creation of the right environment to empower Product Designers (and product team) to be productive and stay on focus via sharing responsibility and ownership.

Member and active supporter (main organizer of IxDD 2019 Zürich) of the IxDA community Zürich chapter.

I'm currently working and living in Zürich area and sometimes I'm visiting my original town on Como Lake, Italy.
