Storytelling as a design practice

Emily Campbell & Rachael Kleinman

Hosted by InVision

Join us to explore how you can use the power of stories to increase the impact of your designs.

The most powerful experiences are centered in stories, and the experiences we design are no different.

Stories help us better understand our audience. They help paint a comprehensive picture of their needs, wants, and abilities. Narrative storytelling helps to build empathy, and lets us test our assumptions and designs against real contexts where they’ll be used. And stories help us communicate with others in a universal language, making it easier to form partnerships and collaborate on the big problems we face.

This immersive workshop will explore different storytelling methods and examples of how to apply them in your creative work.

Workshop tickets are sold separately from other conference events.

Outline

After an icebreaker and a brief introduction, we’ll use different storytelling methods to unwind a real-world design problem

  • How research can help us understand our customers as character archetypes, a more universal approach to the user persona
  • Mapping the customer’s journey as a storyline to identify the feedback triggers that keep them engaged and successful
  • Treating interaction design as a dialogue between the individual and the interface, and using that framing to craft designs that are more meaningful and human-centered

Each section will begin with an overview of a storytelling method, practical examples, and tools. However most of this workshop will consist of interactive group work.

Target audience

Anyone who designs products and services, especially those seeking a new framing of their work or who are interested in interaction and product design.
